About me and art-making
I can't remember when I began making art but I've never stopped. I love all the arts and have studied, practiced and taught theater, creative writing and visual art. Most of my working life was dedicated to teaching high school students to make visual art; the art of teaching itself being one of my more challenging creative outlets. I have recently retired from teaching and have turned my attention fully to my own art making..
My work is intuitive. By that I mean I rarely know where I'm going with it at the beginning and I'm usually surprised by it at the end. I like to play with materials and one of the factors that guides or constrains me is the material I'm using. I am also deeply interested in exploring the use of line, color and shape as ways to express things that coded ways of expression, such as words, symbols and images cannot. This also helps to guide and constrain my work. Recently I have been collaging with and drawing on architectural velum. The translucent quality of the surface opens up a variety of possibilities I am currently exploring.
